At Nightingale’s Medical English ® we take a holistic approach to study. Learning should be enjoyable. However, exams can be stressful for many students. Studies have shown meditation, yoga, mindfulness and music, reduce stress, increase concentration, improve memory, alertness and brain function.
These simple but effective practices can also help when settling into a new life, culture, and are a valuable tool to combat the physical and emotional demands that healthcare professionals face in practice, in particular those placed on doctors, nurses, and healthcare assistants. If self care is not implemented regularly, they can find themselves with symptoms of unwanted stress mentally and physically.
To aid learning and preparation for practice, hatha and restorative yoga classes are available on our courses. To increase learning, and encourage taking time out mentally, to check-in with our bodies regularly, to counteract the negative effects of stress.
Physically hatha, and in particular restorative yoga, can help restore balance to the musculoskeletal system, where imbalances can occur over time due to the physically repetitive, and stressful nature of healthcare work. Yoga in general can build strength in the body, to help prevent injury. Through the practice of yoga, we gain a greater awareness of our body and mind. Therefore, leaving us better able to address issues earlier, rather than later.
Mentally, through focusing on the breath, and alignment in asanas or postures, the mind has a chance to be still, and distance itself from possible negative thoughts, worries, and the stimulus of daily events, which has a calming effect on the nervous system, leaving us more refreshed, recharged, and better able to cope with stress off the mat, in control emotionally, responsive, instead of reactive, and with greater levels of concentration and mental clarity.
In cultivating self awareness and compassion for ourselves, we develop a greater compassion and understanding of others. This leaves healthcare professionals better placed to promote the importance of self care in maintaining good mental and physical health, in those that they care for.
In our lessons and on our courses you will have the opportunity to learn the following:
